Students encouraged to work hard, grasp all opportunities

Students attending Workman’s Primary School in St. George have been encouraged to work hard and grasp all opportunities presented to them, so that they can excel and become whatever they want to be.

The words of encouragement came from their principal Anthea Newton-Gadsby yesterday, on the occasion of the official visit of Governor General of Barbados, His Excellency Sir Elliott Belgrave to the small, rural school.

Newton-Gadsby told the students that they could learn from the example set by Sir Elliott, who worked hard and excelled at the academic level, which then enabled him to reach the top. Noting that the students should follow in his footsteps, the school principal also expressed her hope that the Governor General’s visit would empower students to do so.

Also encouraging the students to work hard to excel and to follow in the footsteps of the Governor General, was District Education Officer, Shamin Ally. Delivering remarks on the behalf of the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Education, Ally pointed to three distinct qualities or characteristics possessed by Sir Elliott, which students should aspire to have.

Acknowledging that Sir Elliott came from humble beginnings, the District Education Officer first pointed out that Sir Elliott always valued education. This enable him to be dedicated and focused at school and to work hard to excel at the academic level. Secondly, she said, Sir Elliott worked hard to ensure that he was an honourable person and as such, was always honest, truthful and fair in his dealings, even at in the judicial arena, where he spent many of his earlier years. Lastly, she noted, Sir Elliott was always and still is a well-respected person in his community, in the country and beyond, given his exemplary conduct in all areas of his life.

As such, Ally told the students that while all of them may not be able to hold high office, they could seek to mold their character after that of the Governor General’s and in so doing, strive to be the best they can be in all spheres of life. (RSM)
