Students’ artwork on show at airport

Visitors and locals while in the Departure Lounge of the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) Inc. can now view artwork created by winners of the GAIA Children’s Art Competition.

This inaugural contest carried the theme, ‘Barbados, Our Country, Our Culture’ and “over 200 entries” were submitted to be judged. Entrants were drawn from 20 schools, both primary and secondary, in the parishes of St. Philip and Christ Church.

Speaking at the competition’s awards ceremony yesterday, Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Airport Staff Committee, Keith Goddard, said he was pleased with the response to the first-time contest.

He explained that it formed part of that Committee’s activities to commemorate this island’s 50th year of Independence. He further said that the competition, which is slated to be an annual occurrence, is one component of the airport’s plan to officially launch its Arts In The Airport Programme.

“[This] programme seeks to be part of the larger vision set out by management to enhance the customer experience for passengers by exhibiting artwork and presenting various aspects of art that engages travellers in innovative and memorable experiences.”

He added, “Our Arts In The Airport proposal has four components – culinary, visual arts, fashion shows [and] live performing arts inclusive of music, dance and drama. Under this programme, GAIA Inc. will work with various agencies and individuals to provide an experience showcasing diverse talent and culture that fully represents Barbados. This will include but is not limited to rotating art exhibits, live performances and a taste of the island’s fashion and culinary delights that celebrate the beauty, spirit and great creativity of local artistes.”

Goddard pointed out that at present, 50 pieces are mounted in the area and additional artwork will be added at a later stage. The artwork, which was done using pastels, pencil, crayon, paint and collage, among others, will be up until April. (MG)
