STRONG ADVICE! Constable Richard Garrett of the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF) chatting with (from left) Javier Hoyte, Elijah Garrett, Tyrese Nash and Joshua Marshall yesterday after Boys’ Week morning assembly at the school. The young boys were advised to step up and do their best not only in school, but in the rest of their lives.

Step up to the plate, boys urged

A call is being issued to boys to step up to the plate and make sure that they can hold their own in their school, their respective communities and in this country as a whole.

It is being made by Teacher at Bay Primary and Facilitator of the Boys’ Week under the theme of ‘Mission Possible’, Kirt Jordan, who spoke with the media yesterday after Boys’ Week morning assembly at the school.

He stated that boys can achieve anything that they set their mind to and he just wanted to make it known to them that once they have the confidence, they can be productive persons.

“Anything that you put your mind to, you can do. Just make sure that that thing is positive and give it your all and try to be as productive as you can be in terms of being good citizens of Barbados, so that we are not outshined by females as much as it is happening right now.
We can step up to the plate and fulfil our roles as men in this society.”

The event began four years ago in an effort to get boys to overcome any obstacles that they may be facing so that they can fulfil their truest potential, he said.

“It was an initiative that started four years ago. We were looking at some delinquency and deficiency in our school and in our society and we wanted to curb that. We took advantage of the fact we have a number of males on staff that are young and strong and we put together this week of events to uplift the boys in a holistic manner – socially, spiritually and physically.”

It has been very successful to date with many persons coming on board to lend their support, stated Jordan.

“The boys have been fully involved. The teachers are excited and even the parents are calling to endorse it and to make sure that it happens every year. So it has been very successful. The Minister has given his blessing, the principal, the management, they have all given their blessings.”

The week of activities for this year started last Friday with the launch. This afternoon, there will be a career evening where the boys would get the chance to learn more about careers in the military, the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF), the Barbados Defence Force (BDF), the Barbados Fire Service (BFS) and the Prison Service.

On Wednesday, fathers will come into the school and speak to the young boys and panel about some games like cricket and dominoes; on Thursday, there will be a physical activities day; and on Friday, there will be a tour of the Barbados Wildlife Reserve and a picnic
afterwards.
