Officials: Collection service won’t be affected during Crop Over

Sanitation Service Authority’s (SSA) commitments to the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) will not impede its service to the communities island-wide this Crop Over season.

This assurance was given by the Acting Manager with SSA, Shawn Phillips in relation to SSA fulfilling its sponsorship obligation of collecting and removing trash before and after NCF events. He added that the SSA has been working to put measures in place to ensure this will be the case.

Phillips was at the time responding to a question asked by a member of the media during a NCF press event with platinum partners of the 2016 Crop Over Festival. The event was held at the Pure Ocean Restaurant in St. Lawrence Gap.

“We have and we are implementing a programme where we are engaging other government entities in utilising more of what we call conventional technology, the opened back trucks for everyone, to assist with the delivery of the service throughout the communities,” he explained.

There have been recent reports of challenges which the SSA have had with garbage collection across the island due to the limited availability of trucks. Phillips also gave the assurance that measures are being implemented to tackle this.

“We are assiduously working to bring our truck count back up into the high teens, near 20. This morning we are around 14. We are looking to increase those numbers. We are on a programme for increasing those numbers. So our delivery of service to the NCF will in no way impact on our delivery of service to the other sections of the nation,” Phillips assured.

He added, “That is what we are doing in utilising these opened back vehicles throughout the island as well. However, in actually delivering our service to the NCF we utilise some compactors and also we will be putting down some receptacles around these events as well and more so at these events, the SSA has now recently changed its logo where we are actually pushing the message basically of ‘Clean Thoughts, Clean Living, Clean Nation’ and that is one of the messages that we will be trying to get across at these events.” (MG)
