Speightstown Market, Pan Around De Town transform city

The sweet sounds of gospel and calypso played on the steel pan, as well as Tuk Band music, filled a quiet Speightstown yesterday, transforming it to a vibrant city.

This was the atmosphere over the weekend in this St. Peter location, when the Speightstown Market and Pan Around De Town occurred.

Getting started from 10 in the morning, it was an attraction for locals and visitors to the island, who traversed the stretch from Orange Street Grocer down to the area closest to Republic Bank. Some individuals made purchases of the food, craft, jewellery and drinks that were on sale. While others spent their time listening to live performances at one of the two main stages, others watched the artists at various locations around the city paint different aspect of the town’s architecture.

For the children, there were balloon animals on sale and different knick-knacks to hold their interest. For many, ice-cream and fruit smoothies were the beverages of choice to cool down the heat of the day.

Speaking to The Barbados Advocate, acting Event Producer, David ‘’Ziggy E” Walcott, said he was pleased with how the event went. He pointed out that delicious local delicacies and performances by the four roving Tuk Bands: Rose Hill Tuk Band, Corbin’s Tuk Band, Troubadours International and Drummers’ Federation, were two of the main attractions for both locals and tourists.

He added that this, event number two on the cards this pan-tastic weekend, was extra special, because it offered members of the public a little bit of everything.

“I think things like this would bring out people who would not generally go to a fete, but still would like to enjoy part of the Festival, and I guess with here, you get a little piece of what the Festival has to offer. The Festival isn’t just about soca or calypso, it is about many other things [such as] art.”
