Sixth form reaping success at Alexandra

ONE year since the introduction of a sixth form at the Alexandra School, the Peter institution is already reaping success.

During the school’s Annual Awards Ceremony, Principal Orson Alleyne expressed how pleased he was with the performance of the 20 students in Unit One of the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE). He reported a pass rate of 100 per cent in some subject areas.

“The school was not disappointed with the results of the examinations. Students sat examinations in Art & Design – 100 per cent pass rate; Communication Studies – 98 per cent pass rate; Entrepreneurship – 98 per cent pass rate; Information Technology – 83 per cent pass rate; Physical Education & Sport – 100 per cent pass rate; and Tourism Studies – 100 per cent pass rate,” he revealed.

“We are excited to see the results at the end of this current school year.”

Alexandra joined sixth form ranks during the academic year 2015/2016, becoming the ninth school on the island to do so.

Eager to make the new addition to the school a success, the Principal recalled that he and staff conducted research, as well as received assistance from other sixth form principals in getting the school’s programme together.

“It was really an exciting time for us at Alexandra School,” he expressed.

Alleyne also disclosed that the overall performance of students who sat the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations remained at 69.9 per cent, the same percentage that was realised in the 2014/2015 academic year.

As it relates to internal examinations, the Principal said that students were encouraged to achieve and maintain a pass mark of 70 per cent per subject.

“The truth is that this goal is not necessarily overly lofty, but rather one which speaks to the fact that we at Alexandra School recognise the ability of the students who enrol here. We are sometimes of the view that students can do even more than they are recently doing…

“There is much room for the involvement of parents and other interested parties to work with and support the efforts of teachers, in helping students to be consistent in achieving at the highest possible level,” Alleyne stressed. (TL)
