SIXTH FORM HOPE FOR ALLEYNE SCHOOL

Principal of the Alleyne School, Julia Beckles, is hopeful that during the school’s next Speech Day and Prize-Giving Ceremony she can speak of the successful start of a sixth form there.

She told this to the audience gathered in the school’s auditorium on Wednesday for this year’s ceremony.

Beckles further spoke about steps that have been taken by the Belleplaine, St Andrew institution in preparation for such a reality.

“Of course, you have heard of the plans to elevate our school to sixth form status. Key to the success of this plan was deciding on our subject niche, and in January 2016 a committee of staff was formed to manage the process. But we also tasked our students when we used a questionnaire to ask them to indicate the subjects that they would be interested in pursuing.”

She continued, “We also asked teachers and some parents to give their input. One of the drawbacks is the fact that the fifth formers still have no classroom. We intend to fix this problem. Our proposal is at the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation and I hope that at the next speech day I would be reporting to you on the successful start of sixth form at Alleyne School.”

Back in January of this year, Education Minister, Ronald Jones expressed his desire to see the educational institution become one of the schools on the island which has a sixth form. He voiced this while speaking at the launch of Leaders’ Week at the school. (MG)
