Rev: Service the measure of greatness

Members of the Queen’s College Association (QCA) began their week of activities yesterday with a church service at the St. Michael’s Cathedral in Bridgetown.

Addressing the congregation gathered for this special occasion was the Very Reverend Dr. Jeffrey Gibson, who based his sermon on the passage of Scripture found in Luke chapter 17 verse 10, which states: “So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”

Rev. Dr. Gibson explained that the practice of working for reward is not the way of the Lord. Instead, he said, people should do their duty and worry about nothing else; especially since there is nothing that can be done to earn the grace that God bestows upon them. As such, he encouraged the congregation to embrace Jesus’ model of servant leadership when doing community outreach.

The reverend acknowledged that Queen’s College has long produced leaders in the community in many areas, and he urged them to continue in this vein.

He also reminded them that Jesus taught that service is the measure of greatness – not status or position.

Giving the welcome and extending greetings on  behalf of the alumni  was QCA President, Cecelia Phillips-Stallard. She expressed that the message was a timely one as it fits with the week’s theme, “Excellence: Visions of Development”, which encourages alumni to look ahead to seek viable ways to sustain the  QC legacy.

Highlighting some of the activities planned for the week, Phillips-Stallard outlined that a joint assembly and tree planting; the Elsie Payne Memorial Lecture; and  treasure hunt and lime are among the events scheduled.
