Ratcliffe passes away on Kadooment Day

SHOCK, disbelief and sadness spread quickly across Barbados after reports that well-known designer, Renee Ratcliffe, reportedly collapsed outside the National Stadium yesterday and subsequently died around 10:30 am.

This after many Barbadians, just a short time before, watched the effervescent designer of Jump Promotions band being interviewed live on television. There, an energised Ratcliffe stressed the importance of making sure that her revellers are “happy and go lucky”, a play on words Happy Go Lucky, which is the theme of the 2016 seven-section band which she designed. The band is celebrating its 10th anniversary. She was also well-known for her annual contribution to Kiddies Kadooment.

Forlorn looks could be seen on the faces of some of her friendly competitors as they received the unexpected news. Many were visibly crestfallen including veteran designer, Gwyneth Squires, who spoke about her last interaction with the designer and her generosity.

Laura Galt of Jump Promotions said the band recognised a moment of silence for Renee and tributes were paid by Carol Roberts and entertainer Lil Rick on the truck. She said the revellers were encouraged to continue their jump in honour of Renee.

Tributes poured in on social media as persons expressed their shock at the passing of the creative designer who some describe as one of the biggest personalities in Barbados, one who loved everyone.

Opposition Leader Mia Mottley said: “ Only this morning I watched Renee Sheppard Ratcliffe on CBC TV in her element and giving testimony! She was asked what was her greatest achievement for Crop Over and she thought she was being asked what was her greatest achievement in life – and she answered her children. That had to be the Almighty talking to her so she could show her absolute love for her boys. Rene this was your last Mas and you graced it well with your passion and creativity for which you will always be remembered. A true true Bajan woman who lived giving her all always! Blessings and prayers to her sons and all of her family - you shared her with the people of this land. She was ours as she was yours.”

Barbados’ High Commissioner to London Reverend Guy Hewitt posted directly to the designer’s Facebook page, “ We give thanks for the life of an amazing mother, friend, designer and leader. My daughter Maya loved being a part of her team. May she rest in peace.” (JH)
