QC takes Sagicor Visionaries Challenge

THE Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre was a showroom of innovation on Monday evening as the Sagicor Visionaries Challenge culminated with its presentation ceremony.

After words of encouragement given to students by Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Senator Harcourt Husbands, and Anderson King, Vice President of Corporate Communications and Marketing at Sagicor Life Inc., it was time to announce who would be the winners of a trophy, a certificate, GoPro Cameras and Samsung smartwatches, a mobile science technology centre, six CXC-approved science kits, a seven-day trip to Tampa, Florida to attend a STEM Ambassador programme and a Kindle Fire for the winning team’s supervising teacher.

Although already receiving special awards including Most Relevant to School and Country, Most Creative and Most Community Involvement, Queen’s College was deemed the winner of the challenge for their project entitled, “Sweet Coconut Grey Water Filtration System”. Second place was awarded to Daryll Jordan Secondary School, which received a trophy, a certificate, four CXC-approved science kits and a mobile science technology centre; and third place was awarded to The St. Michael School, which received ten CXC-approved science kits, a trophy and a certificate.

Students from the Queen’s College team were ecstatic that their hard work had paid off. They explained that the project began since last September and as the last stages of the project were going on concurrently with CAPE examination preparations, it was a bit of a challenge, but they are happy to know that their efforts were not in vain.

The Alleyne School and the Seventh-Day Adventist Secondary School, the latter of which had two teams participating, were also part of the Visionaries Challenge.
