Poverty resurging, says Mottley

March 31st was 78 years since a group of people met courageously to form what was then known as the Barbados Progressive League, and is now known as the Barbados Labour Party.

On this date 78 years later, a new representative for Christ Church West was elected. According to the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Mia Mottley, the first meeting was in a time when there was a major need for change because life was hard – a change that Mottley declares is again necessary today.

Mottley further stated that the party was interested in the improvement of the lives of people and to protect others at all times.

Today, the party which she leads stands on the shoulders of those great men and women, and lives to uphold its principles. This is something of which the DLP cannot boast, she asserted

She noted that DLP’s planning is devoid of leadership and is driving a nation that was coming out of poverty back into it. Mottley stated that this could be seen in
the parishes of St. Lucy, St. Peter, St. John, St. Michael and St. George, where people are thrown back to the old days of not having sufficient water.

The opposition leader lamented that some persons in these parishes cannot risk sleeping late on mornings, for fear that they may wake to realise that they are without water.

In addition, the allowances that are banned by the  current administration are a major issue for Mottley. She stated that those tax returns which used to go a long way in providing extra money for families in dire need have been cut significantly, leaving her  to believe that the citizens of Barbados are being treated like “outside” children.

To this end, the Opposition is holding the Government accountable and is calling for major action to be taken to reverse the current plight of the country and its
people.

These comments were given by Hon. Mia Mottley as she endorsed her Party’s candidate for Christ Church West,
Dr. William Duguid.
