Local manufacturers have jumped on the 50th Anniversary of Independence bandwagon, as many of them have chosen to reflect this significant milestone in the products which they have made, and this is commendable.

These sentiments were expressed by the Prime Minister of Barbados, the Rt. Hon. Freundel Stuart as he spoke with the media after touring BMEX 2016 on Saturday evening, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre (LESC).

He said that it was encouraging to note because it shows that these manufacturers are paying attention to all of the advice that has been provided.

Also, that it was a sign that they are proud of their country, that they recognise the significance of the historical event, wanting to ensure that they are a part of it.

“Again, you talk about these things and you think that people are not listening. Clearly, the manufacturers are - as evident here at BMEX, because there is a pronounced consciousness of the fact that Barbados is celebrating 50 years of Independence.

Many manufacturers are anchoring what they do and producing jubilee products for the public’s consumption, and that is again a heartwarming feature of BMEX 2016 – that so many people feel so proud that Barbados has attained 50 years of Independence, and they want to make sure that they are a part of the celebrations. Not without significance of course, the 50th Anniversary Secretariat is represented here as well.”

In addition to these manufacturers, other organisations and sectors in this island have also come on board in paying homage to this milestone. These include the
communities and the schools, the latter of which have already started and displayed projects in their respective educational institutions celebrating this golden jubilee. This will only intensify as the year progresses, said Stuart.

“So clearly there is a heightened level of sensitivity in respect of this issue and I anticipate that as the year rolls on, people will be more and more sensitive to the fact that Barbados is about to complete 50 years of Independence, that we are seeing more of our people getting involved, more communities involved, more schools getting involved.”

The Prime Minister also highlighted the increase in the amount of persons who have taken the agricultural industry in a whole new direction, moving from the traditional way of looking at this sector to a more entrepreneurial outlook.

“I am seeing too an increase in the marriage between agriculture and industry. That is a marriage of which we have been aiming for some time – agro-industrial production.

"It is heartwarming that an increasing number of our people, our manufacturers and our people in agriculture are picking up that message as well, and understanding that agro-industrial production makes us even fitter to export to distant climes. So I think all in all, there is justification for a positive outlook for our manufacturing and agriculture sectors, BMEX is once again eloquent evidence of that.”
