Pledge to take the country forward

As the nation of Barbados is seeking to make an economic recovery, Barbadians are being asked to make a determination as to how they can help in taking the nation forward and to actually make a pledge to do so, in celebration of 52 years of Independence.
The call came this week from Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Trade, Sandra Husbands.

“I want to encourage Barbadians. I want to say something to you. We have a future to craft. November 30th is the day on which we celebrate our Independence and …we tend to focus primarily on our traditional foods, on our traditional music, wearing our national colours. But I want Barbadians this November to make this Independence one with a difference. We have come through a very difficult time, but recovery is ahead. But recovery calls for each one of us (to do our part),” Husbands remarked.

“So this Independence, I am asking each Barbadian to make a pledge as to what you will do to help take the nation forward. Make a pledge as to what you can do to help further our economic development. Make a pledge for what you can do to help in the community, in the society, by giving part of your time back to help build up our communities, to help take care of our children, to help take care of the elderly,” she added.

Husbands meanwhile noted that she will be going all out for her constituency of St. James South and her country, doing all she can “as a faithful servant”.

“I have been given the privilege to serve at the highest level in this country and I am grateful to the people of St. James South for it. I want to utter my recommitment to them and their wellbeing (this Independence), to declare to them that I will work with all of my heart, all of my being, all of the resources that are at my disposal, to help them to be successful. I want to pledge to my country that they will have in me a faithful servant, who will serve in their best interest at all times and I want to encourage every Barbadian, to make a pledge, decide what you will do for this nation and go out and do it,” she further commented, while stressing that the nation’s people must work together to bring about prosperity, growth and peace and security for the country.

Husbands was at the time speaking during a recent debate of the Income Tax (Amendment and Validation) Bill, 2018 in the House of Assembly. (RSM)
