Pay more attention to the creative industry!

Vice-President of the Barbados Film and Video Association (BFVA), Rommel Hall would like to see more attention being paid to the creative arts in 2019.

He says the creative sector has the potential to assist the island with overcoming the current economic conditions.

“We have seen so many examples all over the world where the creative industry has not only helped, but rescued [and] not only rescued, but pulled and maintained the country once it pulled the country out of the hole. We have human resources all over Barbados that can get it done, but still have this love affair with manufacturing and sugar cane that I really don’t understand. But what I would like us to do is start putting that same kind of effort [into the creative arts] and watch the country will rise after that.”

Reflecting on 2018, Hall said this year has been “so, so” for the organisation. He highlighted the loss of some sponsors as one of the challenges faced.

“It had some trying times because, again with the austerity measures and the harsh economic times, we lost some sponsors because the first thing that people cut is their marketing budget, but we still had our Barbados Visual Media Festival [and] it still went well. We still had some new films produced for that and that went well.”

The BFVA Vice-President said in the coming year the organisation will be “trying to do some new things” and continue with the activities that have yielded positive results.

“We will have the Festival again. We are trying to reach out a little bit more to the schools [and] we have a lot more stuff happening where we are trying to get a lot more workshops done.”
