Parkinson’s Art Club decorates Christmas tree

There was plenty of laughter and fun in Independence Square as the students of Parkinson Memorial Secondary School, guided by their Art teacher, decorated a Christmas tree.

The Christmas tree is one of many being decorated in the City as part of an initiative of the Barbados Branch of The Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS). When The Barbados Advocate visited the square, student Erica Norville was busy adding decorations to the nearly completed tree. Art Teacher of Parkinson School, Petra Haynes, explained that the decorations on the tree were made from recycled materials found around the home and school environment. Their decorations consisted of plastic bottles, bottle caps, popsicle sticks, glitter and bits of fabric, and they started making the decorations back in October. Haynes added that the students are part of an Art Club and there are presently fifteen members.

The Art teacher said, for the students, it is fun and relaxing and the activity gives them an opportunity to be creative and enjoy the outdoors.

This year, Parkinson school decorated the tree of Dominica.

On Wednesday, Members of the Royal Commonwealth Society along with the Barbados Defence Force volunteers continued to assemble the Christmas Trees in National Heroes’ Square and Independence Square. On the Chamberlain Bridge, the Nativity Scene was in place along with some of the decorations opposite the Barbados Revenue Authority.
