Parents urged to follow through with students

Parents are being encouraged to work alongside the educational institutions that their children attend, reinforcing key concepts and values, for the best outcomes.

Reverend Monica Edwards, featured speaker at the Daryll Jordan Secondary School’s Awards and Prize Giving Ceremony, which was held recently, made this call.

“Teachers can’t do the job alone. Parents, we also have a responsibility to ensure that we reinforce what is given at the institution of learning. We have to ensure that when our children come back to us, that we express interest in ‘What happened today?’ ‘What did you receive today?’” Rev. Edwards told the parents gathered.

“We have to be the ones encouraging the children to ‘go do the follow up, go do your homework, go do your assignment.’ That is important, because many times this is where we fall down, because there is no follow up, no continuity and parents, we have to take our role as parents seriously. We cannot expect the school to give our children the discipline and the stability that they need. It starts in our homes,” the mother of three added.

Rev. Edwards also had a strong message of responsibility for students gathered.

“Children, you too. You have a responsibility for your education. If education is going to be a virtual currency, it means that you have to come to a place where you are not resistant… where you are not having this attitude of being lackadaisical. You too have to come to a place where you understand that what is being given to you is for you. It is for your development, it is for your enhancement,” Edwards admonished.

As such, she encouraged the students to be diligent and to strive to do their best at school, so they do not leave with any regrets. She meanwhile commended the 140 pupils receiving prizes and awards, for staying on a positive path and for their academic success. (RSM)
