Pageant winners Howell, Small-Brathwaite are L T Gay Primary’s emperor and empress

A new emperor and empress now reign at the Lawrence T Gay Primary School. They are Mr. Guinea, Amari Howell and Ms. Congo, Jatara Small-Brathwaite.

They were crowned last Saturday when they successfully won the “Emperor and Empress of Lawrence T Gay 2019”. The pair came up against seven other contestants during the pageant which was held in the auditorium of Queen’s College.

The night’s other top places were seized by first runners-up, Mr. Central African Republic, Joshua Osbourne and Ms. Liberia, Ki-anna Pilgrim Small.

Under the theme “Reflections of Africa: A Mirror Image”, the event got off to a rousing start with a dance and an introduction. It was during this performance that the judges and the large audience got the opportunity to meet the four boys and five girls who vied for the evening’s top prizes. This was also chance for all present to briefly learn about which countries of the African continent were represented.

This segment was followed by a showcase of talent. The female contestants: Ms. Congo, Jatara Small-Brathwaite and Ms. Gabon, Dakoda Headley each did a dance presentation, Ms. Mali, Shanika Straker, and Ms. Ghana, Taniyah Gibbs each sang a song while Miss Liberia,
Ki-anna Pilgrim Small did a spoken word piece. Meanwhile, the male contestants: Mr. Central African Republic, Joshua Osbourne and Mr. Niger, Sean Webster each sang, Mr. Guinea, Amari Howell did a body building and dance presentation, while Mr. Chad, Joshua Peter thrilled during his Taekwondo display. At the end of the evening, the male and female winners of this segment were Mr. Central African Republic and Ms. Congo.

The area of talent was not the only one where the judges were wowed by the participants. This also occurred when they appeared onstage in the Costume and the Formal Wear sections. During both of these segments, the creativity and the craftsmanship of each designer worn, clearly stood out. Both the boys and the girls looked smart in their pieces which highlighted unique aspects of the rich culture, customs, tribes and languages of the countries they represented.

It was Peter and Small-Brathwaite who were judged as having the Best Costume male and female prizes respectively. On the other hand, it was Webster and Straker who copped the Best Formal Wear male and female prizes respectively.

‘Emperor and Empress of Lawrence T Gay 2019’ came to a close with a question and answer segment before the judges’ results were revealed. Other awardees on the evening were Gibbs who was selected as the Students’ Choice, Howell won the People’s Choice prize and Headley captured the Best Project prize. Pilgrim Small was adjudged Miss Photogenic and she also secured the prize for Best Introduction.
