Open Day creates excitement at Maria Holder Nursery School

In celebration of its 5th anniversary, the Maria Holder Nursery School recently held an Open Day event at its Sharon, St. Thomas location, under the theme “The Clothes We Wear”.

“It is a two day event where we are showcasing the school at its best. The children would have been working quite hard and the teachers as well and we have wonderful support from the parents,” Principal Shelley Boyce told The Barbados Advocate.

“We felt it would have been a great idea this year, because we are celebrating five years and usually, persons dress up when it is a celebration. So this is a celebration and we are wrapping all the subject areas across the curriculum, under the theme, “The Clothes We Wear” she explained.

Boyce noted that in the areas of science and social studies, the three and four year-old pupils at the school were able to explore various types of fabric and textiles and they were also eager to learn how clothes are produced and which animals and plants provide us with clothing and also accessories.

Teacher of Science Gale Carter also noted what the students were able to see things firsthand.

“We would have looked at the animals that give us clothing and they would have seen videos showing how to get wool from sheep and the process that the fleece goes through when it comes off the sheep. We would have done that with leather as well, (showing them the) cowhide, and the different things and clothing it is used to make,” Carter added.

“We also looked at bird feathers, plumes and jewellery and we also looked at the cotton plant, which is on display. We also looked at the reptiles and the skins they produce, such as snake skin and alligator skin. All those things we would have explored,” she stated.

Teacher in charge of the Steady Stitchers class, Mycola Gill, had on display most things associated with making apparel – two small scale sewing machines, buttons, sewing thread, pins, a tracing wheel, a seam ripper, a thimble and other items one would ordinarily find in a garment maker’s shop. The class also had on display some tie dye shirts they made and uniforms worn by various professionals, such as doctors and nurses.

Speaking about the interest shown by students, she noted that they grew even more excited, as their parents came in to look around.

All in all, the principal was pleased with the outcome of the proceedings.

“I want to commend the teachers highly for a job well done. I want to certainly commend the children. They worked hard and they are three and four. We never are to underestimate these children and of course I have to tip my hat to parents as well, who have always given us great support at the Maria Holder Nursery School,” the school principal remarked.
