Ocean Two honours Grynner

Veteran calypsonian, “Grynner”, has been formally recognised for his contribution to entertainment in Barbados and the diaspora, by staff and management of one of the island’s leading luxury Resorts.

The 70 year-old MacDonald Blenman, an iconic figure known internationally as the Mighty Grynner, was publicly honoured by the Ocean Two Resort & Residences, just before his performance at their 2016 Kadooment Fever.   

“This is a special occasion for us, and we want to say thank you for your contribution to music and entertainment over the past 48 years, and for making Barbados proud. You have given us good music year after year, and we are looking forward to even more over the next 10 years,” said Operations Manager, Paul Collymore.

Grynner was formally presented with an inscribed plaque, and Collymore also disclosed that he was awarded a staycation weekend for two at the Resort, where they intend to “take good care of him”.

In accepting the award, Grynner praised the management and staff of Ocean Two for the gesture.

“I am very thankful to you and really appreciate this award. I have been in the business for a long time... so next year, when I start back, I will be counting from one. Thank you very much,” Grynner said to much laughter and applause.

Once the formality was over, the seven-time Road March champion launched into an energetic performance that won new fans, as he belted out a mix of his top numbers and moved an audience that included both locals and visitors.

Grynner closed the Kadooment Fever experience with an encore of his hugely popular 2016 song “Take Me Down The Road”, which has emerged as a fitting example of how he has been able to reinvent himself over the years to appeal to both young and old.

Grynner had also performed at Ocean Two’s staff awards in June, and Collymore said his music “speaks volumes and connects with locals and visitors of all ages”.
