NUSB shows appreciation

Marjorie Watson has won the hearts of members of the National United Society of the Blind (NUSB).

“Loving, caring, patient and understanding” was how President Rudyard Welch described the only trained Adjustment to Blindness Officer in the country, as he presented her with not only the President’s Award, but also Personality of the Year during NUSB’s inaugural Awards ceremony, held at the Bethel Methodist Church Auditorium, yesterday.

The NUSB conceptualised the awards in an effort to publicly recognise those who have contributed to the organisation over the years; persons who give of themselves and their services through selfless acts.

Wallace Clarke, a driver with the Transport Board bus for persons with disabilities, was recognised for his kindness. The NUSB believes that he executes his job in a professional and caring manner and always makes sure no one is left behind.

A lady of many firsts, Kerryann Ifill was described as a phenomenal woman. She was the first blind student to attend the University of the West Indies; and the first woman, first person with a disability and youngest ever to hold the position of President of the Senate. NUSB expressed their appreciation to her, noting that the intelligent and technologically savvy member is always ready, willing and able to share her wealth of knowledge.

Margaret Toby, a vendor in the Fairchild Street Bus Terminal, also received an appreciation award. She can be found assisting individuals who are blind to their destinations in Bridgetown, often leaving her tray unattended.

A passionate advocate for the blind, Ernie Young served as President of NUSB and hosted the Society’s first tea party. She has been a member of the Barbados Blind Cricket Association since its inception and has been integral to the introduction of the sport to Barbados and the region.

Also awarded for their kindness and dedication to NUSB were Carson Small, Vincent Felton, Denise Vaughan, John Clarke, Elviston Maloney, and the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF) Band.
