NUPW not in march

The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) will not officially be joining the March for Justice organised today by the Barbados Labour Party.

That’s according to Deputy General Secretary (Ag), Delcia Burke, who said their members are however free to join the march on their own. In fact, speaking to members of the media after a meeting with public workers at the Union’s headquarters yesterday afternoon, to notify them of the salary proposals that have been submitted to Government, Burke said the march did not come up on the agenda at yesterday’s meeting.

Burke explained that neither the Union’s General Secretary or President can call out public workers to march or engage in any industrial action. Any such action, she said, would have to be approved by the National Council, and no such approval has been given.

“But I think the mood of the persons here are that they believe that injustices have been served on public servants and that they feel that they would want to march. As individuals they can do that, it is just that we cannot sanction any industrial action without the approval of the National Council,” she insisted.

She added, “It is entirely up to them as individuals if they want to march.”

Today’s March for Justice, which is to be led by the Leader of the Opposition, Mia Mottley is expected to be leave the Parliament Buildings at 12 noon and proceed to Bay Street, where Mottley is expected to address those in attendance. (JRT)
