No regrets!

Acting PM: Gov’t guided by medical evidence

The Mia Mottley-led administration has no regrets in its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Questioned as to whether the government feels remorse about its decision not to close the island’s borders to commercial traffic in light of the growing number of Covid-19 cases on the island, Acting Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw said not at this stage.

“I cannot say that there is a regret. I think you have to deal with the situation as it has confronted us. The cases have reflected a number of Barbadians who went outside of Barbados and returned to Barbados, so if you are saying that we should have closed our borders to Barbadians returning home, I think that is a matter of your personal opinion. I believe that we have tried to accommodate as best as we could persons returning to Barbados. We put in place all of the necessary mechanisms based on the data and evidence available to us at the time. It was therefore not necessary for us at the time to be able to have such drastic measures,” she said.

During a press conference yesterday, Bradshaw pointed out currently the island’s borders “pretty much are closed” to passengers as flights have all but dried up around the world.

“So I do not think there is a regret on the Barbados’ government’s part. We have been guided from the outset based on the medical evidence,” she said, while outlining that Barbados has been guided in the process by international partners.

Bradshaw also outlined that overtime the island’s medical system had been made ready for the situation.

“We are not like the other islands and Barbadians need to appreciate that. Barbados is very sophisticated in its handling of these measures and in particular within the health care sector. So no regrets at this stage from the Barbados government,” she asserted.

Up to press time, the country had recorded 63 Covid-19 positive cases. The number of deaths stood at three. (JMB)
