The smoke from the fire outside the Gymnasium affected the UWI tennis matches which had to be halted until the smoke was cleared.

No major damage from fire outside Wildey Gymnasium

The fire yesterday outside the Gymnasium has not caused any major damage to the building currently under renovation.

Interim CEO of the Gymnasium, Jerry Blenman said that there has been some damage to the exterior. The under panel for the roof and the tiles on the external walls of the building have all been scorched.

It was the debris which was outside the building that caught fire and was burning for just over an hour before the Barbados Fire Service brought things under control.

Blenman said no structural damage has been done to the building and he has been given the assurance that work can resume immediately just as long as they do not compromise the site of the fire. First to the scene were two fire engines that brought the blaze under control before two more arrived bringing the total of fire officers to 16.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown but further investigations are to be carried out.
