Nine to study in China

Barbadians continue to be afforded the opportunity to further their education in the People’s Republic of China.

This year, nine students have been awarded scholarships, and on Monday evening, they received their Admission Letters from H.E. Ms. Wang Ke, Chinese Ambassador to Barbados, during a ceremony held at the Chinese Embassy.
The Ambassador told the awardees that in addition to studying hard, they should take this opportunity to explore China and embrace the language.

“Each year there are thousands of students from overseas who choose Chinese Universities for study… I think that China and the Chinese Universities will embrace you and will help you in the best way – not only in your areas of study, but also help you to know China better.”

“Most will spend one year of their studies learning the Chinese language. That is very important, because if you do well, it help you to make a smooth progress with your academic work. I advise you to take full advantage of the one year of learning Chinese,” she said.

Always grateful to the Government of China, Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, the Hon. Ronald Jones, thanked the Ambassador for the commitment shown to Barbadians wanting to pursue tertiary education in her country.
Minister Jones as well encouraged the students to explore China in their free time.

“Get a feel for the place… You are there to study, but also learn in a broader perspective the culture, the language, the dynamics of the civilisation,” he expressed.

The Education Minister also lauded the areas of study being carried out by the students – International Relations, Architecture, Biomedical Engineering, Accounting, Tourism Management, Quantitative Economics and Business Administration – from Bachelors Degree to Doctorate.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Maxine McClean, acknowledged that the students will be going to China at a time that is very important, not only in China’s history, but the history of Barbados.

“Barbados and China share the view that people to people contact is one of the ways in which we can advance our bilateral relations. So you are not only going as a student, but you are going as an ambassador, a people’s ambassador, and it’s in fact through this, that we will build very lasting relations, because it allows you to foster mutual understanding, respect and tolerance for diversity,” she further expressed.

The recipients of the 2016 scholarships are Racquel Griffith; Jamar Rock; Ronisha Best; Racquel Mason; Stefan Lorde; Christopher Lee; Mathious Willie; Daniesha Maynard and Renata Alleyne. (TL)
