New walk, new script, new stories

This is the promise being given to heritage lovers, as the National Cultural Foundation in association with the Barbados Public Workers Co-operative Credit Union Limited, and the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc, launched Crop Over Heritage Walk for 2016 under the theme, “Bridgetown by Night: On the Road to Independence”.

This is the fourth year for the walk and promises to be the best yet. It will have a new tour, and new stories will be told of the statesmen, women and citizens who have contributed to the development of Barbados, more specifically, Bridgetown, in one way or another.

Natalie Holder, Acting CEO of the Credit Union, stated that she was very happy to be a part of the event for the first time this year, given that this is the year of Barbados’ Golden Jubilee. She noted that the Credit Union being one of the oldest in Barbados has long attended to the needs of the citizens and will continue to do so – now and beyond.

Alison Sealy-Smith, Manager of Special Projects at the National Cultural Foundation, explained that there will be fifty performers made up of dancers, singers, actors and “living” statues who will help bring the guided walk to life as they accurately tell the history of Bridgetown and its Garrison, up until independence.

In highlighting the importance of the walk, Sealy Smith remarked, “The reason behind this type of production is that culture and heritage already constitute a strong selling point and a strategic focus in the continued quest to position Barbados as a leader in an increasingly competitive tourism market. Furthermore, the walk is also important because the key to preserving our culture heritage, is the provision of opportunities for Barbadians and visitors alike to feel and experience facets of the past that are central to the very identity and sense of communal belonging.”

The Crop Over Heritage Walk takes place on Sunday, June 5th at Cricket Legends on Fontabelle, and will make its way to end at Independence Square with a finale and local treats to enjoy.

Buses will be made available to take patrons back to their vehicles at Fontabelle.

There will be two tours, one starting at 6 pm and the other 7 pm Tickets, which are $25, are on sale at TicketPal.com and all Ticket Pal locations.
