Attorney General, Dale Marshall (left) looks on as Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley unveils the plaque to officially open the new police station.

New police station opens

After nearly four years of construction, the new Hastings/Worthing Police Station officially opened its doors yesterday.

Speaking during the opening ceremony that took place yesterday evening, Attorney General, Dale Marshall revealed that the new station and the amalgamation of the the Hastings and Worthing stations have been on the cards for a while.

He was proud to have Sir David Simmons present, as the amalgamation of the stations was his brain child.

“This project has been a long time in coming with the construction beginning in 2016, and from the onset let me say that it was a labour of love, but recently it became a labour. It has taken us a lot to get to where we are at today, it has also cost us a lot. This station has cost us just over $14 million dollars, but the investment I believe will be well worth it,” he said.

“It is a little well known fact that as we prepare for hurricane season, one of the things we have to think about is how to accommodate the police. You would not [have] known and I’m glad you’re knowing now but both the Hastings and Worthing police stations have to be evacuated in the wake of a hurricane, this facility now means that at the time when Barbados is at its most susceptible, that the RBPF and other agencies will continue to be on location and serve the needs of Barbadians.”

In addition to that, he stated that the Six Roads police station was also back on the cards.

The Attorney General noted that Government was not only providing the police with new buildings, as he stressed that it was important to the current administration that the members of the Force enjoyed better terms and conditions as well. He added that it was time for more police officers to do policing, especially in light of Barbados’ criminal challenges, and not simply respond to things, that in many countries, are dealt with purely in the context of the civil law.
