Multiple areas of cooperation can be developed with Poland

There are multiple areas of cooperation that can be developed between Poland and Barbados.

This is coming from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean who delivered remarks at the Inauguration Function of the Consulate General of Poland at the George Washington House.

She stated that one of these areas is the issue of climate change and she commended Poland for their support of small island developing states (SIDS) when it comes to the devastating effects of climate change.

“On the bilateral level, the Barbados-Poland relationship has been strengthened by, among other things, similar views on the serious threat posed by climate change.  The Government of Barbados commends and supports the Polish Government in its view that climate change is a threat to security and welcomes its willingness to advocate on behalf of Small Island Developing States in international fora.  We cannot afford to ignore this phenomenon which threatens our very existence.”

Tourism and security are two other areas that the two countries can develop partnerships in, said McClean.

“My Ministry is also encouraged at the potential for co-operation in other areas between our two countries such as tourism and security.  Also, the Government of Barbados continues to be interested in concluding a Double Taxation Agreement with the Government of Poland and remains with open arms to receive Polish nationals as tourists and business travelers to Barbados.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that despite the difference in the size of the two countries there are numerous other areas of cooperation that can be developed aside from those that she already mentioned and she looked forward to working with both the Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Barbados, Michael Armstrong and the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Barbados, Piotr Kaszuba in further strengthening the ties between the two nations while promising both of them the full support of her Ministry in any plans that they develop along this line.

“Ambassador and Honorary Consul General Armstrong, despite the vast difference in the sizes, economies and populations, of the two countries, I believe that we have the foundation for the nurturing of a solid and productive relationship based on the common interests and shared perspectives.  Let us use every opportunity to build it.”

Among those in attendance at the inauguration were High Commissioners, Ambassadors, Consul Generals and other members of the diplomatic core as well as prominent business persons from Canada, England, New Zealand, Australia, the USA, China, India, Poland, Barbados and other CARICOM countries.
