Motion not about politics, says Mottley

THE no confidence motion is not about politics, but about the suffering Barbadians are experiencing in trying to survive from day to day.

Opposition Leader, Mia Mottley, made this stance clear yesterday in responding to statements made by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, at a branch meeting on Sunday evening, where he claimed that the move was one aimed at expelling any parliamentary representatives in the Barbados Labour Party who did not vote in favour of the motion.

Accusing the PM of missing the boat “yet again”, she said yesterday, “This is not about one-upmanship or winning or losing. This is about allowing people to hear the real facts and having them make decisions about their lives.”

“He needs to realise that this is not about the BLP or the DLP, but about people suffering and trying to make ends meet. If he were to canvass as we are, he would hear people saying, not anything about the two parties, but that they can’t make ends meet. They don’t know how to see the way forward,” she continued.

She further stressed that several issues continued to face Barbadians, including a lack of jobs, the high cost of living, accessibility to water and quality of public sector services.

“In another couple of weeks, you are going to have 4 000 children leaving school, wondering where they are going to get work from, where they are going to get an education from. You have people who cannot get water, you have people not being able to get proper services from government departments, including the hospital,” she outlined.

On Friday, Mottley announced that the Opposition would be filing a no confidence motion this week against the Stuart-led government, as the island has been dealing with “a unparalleled series of dislocation, bad news, challenges and crises” since the beginning of 2016. (JMB)
