MORE TO 4-H THAN MEETS THE EYE

THE Barbados 4-H Clubs are not an “extracurricular activity” or hobby clubs, rather there is more to the organisation.

Such was the point made by Chairman of the Barbados 4-H Foundation, Osmond Harewood, who argued that 4-H is not merely about enjoyment, but rather about developing a holistic individual.

“I will dare say that it is a full-fledged organisation which forms critical networking with social partners in significant areas like agriculture, agro-processing, environmental awareness and health, entrepreneurial development as well as building capacity of our nation’s youth.”

His remarks came while addressing the Barbados 4-H Foundation Exhibition and Prize-giving Ceremony on Saturday at the St. Leonard’s Boys’ School.
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the event, Harewood added that the Clubs seek to develop its young members “and help them attain their goals in life”.

“We have a very strong agricultural base but we also develop their own business skills and therefore we are saying that we are more than just an enjoyment. There is a greater level of personal development for you down the road and in your adulthood and such we want to develop a holistic young person that when they leave school they can start a business by just the programme they have learnt from 4-H.”

During Saturday’s Achievement Day event a number of awards were given to the top achievers and clubs. These were in areas such as Best Garden Club, Rabbit Care and Management and Sheep Care and Management. Among the prizes given were to the Most Outstanding Club (Senior), St. Jude’s Creative Clovers 4-H Club, Most Outstanding Club (Junior), St. Jude’s Creative Clovers 4-H Club, 4-H Junior of the Year (Boy) Damario Padmore and 4-H Girl of the Year (Senior), Latoya Miller.
