Ministry of Transport and Works ready

AS the tropical weather system churned closer to the island chain yesterday, the Ministry of Transport and Works was ensuring that it was ready to respond to any issues arising.

Speaking to The Barbados Advocate yesterday, Minister Michael Lashley stated that all systems were ready ahead of the system’s passage.

Throughout the day, he had attended several meetings with the various heads of departments, the Department of Emergency Management and other stakeholders throughout the day to examine the level of readiness to respond.

Lashley admitted, however, that wherever there was a shortage in necessary equipment that would be necessary to aid in any cleaning up afterwards, the challenge would be met through a partnership with the private sector.

During a meeting with the Transport Board, the decision was made that all service would end by 8 p.m., giving employees enough time to make it home as all businesses, including gas stations – which typically provide 24-hour service – were required to be closed by 6 p.m.

“We are basically prepared and have systems in place for any eventuality,” he assured, noting that other meetings were scheduled later in the day for further consultations. (JMB)
