Massy shows commitment to Barbados with re-opening of Sunset Crest branch

Massy Stores Supermarket at Sunset Crest has re-opened its doors to customers.

Eleven months of work to the tune of BDS$45 million has resulted in a state-of-the-art supermarket, which represents Massy’s continued commitment to supporting the Barbados economy and enhancing the overall infrastructure of the island.

“We believe that this level of investment is critical to our economy, especially at this time,” stressed Country Manager of Massy (Barbados) Ltd, Frere Delmas during the re-opening of the Sunset Crest branch, on Thursday night.

“We in the private sector must lead the charge, supporting the right enabling environment, to get our economy working again.”

Delmas said that equally important is Massy’s contribution to the local agricultural and manufacturing sectors. He revealed that Massy Stores purchases approximately $60 million of goods annually.
“While this number is significant, it would give me a great pleasure to see it increased in the years to come, as it would demonstrate our commitment to these two sectors, and by extension, the growth of our economy,” he expressed.

Committed to creating a more sustainable supermarket model, the Country Manager highlighted that energy efficiency was a major factor in their building considerations both for environmental and economic reasons. In this regard, Massy has installed solar panels and LED lighting, equipped some of its chilled cabinets with doors, customised its AC system with humidity control, as well as used a special type of flooring to assist in reducing its energy consumption.

Also, aware that Holetown is prone to flooding, Delmas further disclosed that Massy has significantly improved its drainage system, in addition, at their own cost repaired the drains on the public roads which they hope will further alleviate the issue of flooding in and around the St. James community.

Under the Massy Stores (Barbados) portfolio, there are four supermarkets, an integrated retail store (SuperCentre) at Warrens, eight Massy Stores pharmacies, one Express location and two independent Massy Stores Home locations.

The new Massy Stores at Sunset Crest, which has a staff of 190 – an increase of 36 per cent – will offer multiple signature experiences under one roof, such as 31 000 square foot of dedicated retail space; a Massy Stores Home section and Pharmacy, Massy United, Massy Card, Surepay, Western Union, Refuel Coffee Shop and a Barbados Lottery Kiosk; Gourmet deli; meat counter; and a premium wines and spirits section.

The entire transformation was undertaken in two phases. The first in January 2017 with the demolition of the mall; followed in May 2017, with similar work to the supermarket structure.

The project, which main contractors were Moorjani Caribbean Limited, generated employment for some 500 sub-contractors/service providers and artisans over the 11 months. (TL)
