March about justice, says Weir

THE march, which the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) will be holding tomorrow, is neither a BLP nor DLP march.

Rather, it will be one about justice. “This is not a march that is seeking to score cheap political points,” said Indar Weir, the BLP’s Public Relations Officer.

Weir told a news conference yesterday that the exercise is about people who can no longer afford to make ends meet, who are unable to provide for their children, and who can no longer find work.

As such, the BLP is prepared to take to the streets to send a clear message to the Government about its callousness, its dismissiveness, and the outrage “which we are being subjected to every time we seek to ask a question,” said Weir.

“You have a situation in Barbados today where Barbadians are being subjected to a tongue of dictatorial outrage. Therefore, if you dare to speak out, you are either labelled anti-government spokesman for the BLP or even someone set up to antagonise the Government.”

According to him, Barbados has reached the stage where “the Leader of the Opposition (Ms. Mia Mottley) and her Parliamentary team are prepared to take to the streets in support of Barbadians. We feel we are duty bound to come out on Thursday (tomorrow) to show Barbadians that the Barbados Labour Party cares and to speak on their behalf”. He also touched on the other problems confronting Barbadians – high taxes, increasing poverty, and water woes.

The BLP member said that at this time, Government should not be seeking to increase the pay of Parliamentarians when employees from the NCC were sent home ... and are in limbo as to what the future holds for them.

Those taking part in the walk will first of all assemble in Heroes Square for 11 a.m. Then starting at midday, the marchers will travel along Probyn Street, Lower Bay Street, and Upper Bay Street, before ending at the traffic lights near Browne’s Beach. Persons are asked to wear white clothing.

On completion of the walk, Ms. Mottley and her Parliamentary colleagues will be making speeches.

The BLP has been given permission by the Royal Barbados Police Force to have the march. (JB)
