MAKE USE OF FUND!

A senior official from Barbados’ lone polytechnic is encouraging more employers to subscribe and to make full use of the benefits of the Education Training Fund (ETF).

Curriculum Development Officer, Acting at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP), Audrey Jones-Drayton offered this advice while addressing Friday’s Presentation Ceremony for the inaugural Maintenance Practices for Plant Operators course.

Jones-Drayton explained that the ETF “is a fund furnished by contributions from all employers across the island solely for the purpose of training”. She further stated that it was through this Fund, which is managed by the Technical, Vocational and Educational Training (TVET) Council, the training of the night’s graduands was made possible.

Furthermore, in her welcome remarks she also took the time to congratulate the course’s 21 participants and expressed how pleased she was that SJPP could once again partner with Roberts Manufacturing Company Limited.

“‘Roberts’ has for years partnered with the Polytechnic in training our students through our Industrial attachment programme and some have remained on staff to this day. We are now returning that courtesy of training their staff, though for a modest fee,” it was revealed.

Among the specially invited guests at this function was Managing Director of Roberts Manufacturing Company Limited, Jason Sambrano. During the feature address, he congratulated Roberts’ staff and went on to stated that he was “very happy to hear the feedback that I have had. That certain students of the course have really immersed themselves in it, taking on board what the course has to offer and really putting their best foot forward in being able to really benefit the most from it”.

He continued, “I would like to also congratulate, Mr. Wayne Springer who has been voted the Most Outstanding Student in the course. We really hope that serves as a platform, as a model for other staff members within the organisation to show that with initiative, being proactive and looking at the level of education that you have and how it can add value, not only to the organisation, but to yourself and your future, that it is very essential we take on board what the company is offering, what the TVET Council is offering in terms of coming to really look at the strategic initiatives to improve the proficiency and knowledge of staff and the proficiency of staff in the workforce… and how we can all work together in national interest to raising the bar and the level of productivity.”
