Lions distributing free readers

The Lions Clubs of Barbados are aiming to conquer blindness and visual impairment by working on a series of projects that would help to spot and rectify any eye problems before they get worse.

Speaking with The Barbados Advocate recently, Chairpersons of the Public Service and Health Committee at Lions Club of Barbados South, Corlis Weekes-Grazette said that one of their major projects is to provide reading glasses to persons who may need them but cannot otherwise afford to purchase them.

These spectacles have been sent to the Lions Club of Barbados South from oversees free of charge and would as a result be distributed free of charge and have already been distributed to persons at the Emerald City Supermarket in Six Roads St. Philip last week Thursday, said Weekes-Grazette who stated that she personally distributed them when she was at the store from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

She said that these spectacles have all been tested and are at various strengths such as 150, and 180 and are available to persons who know their strength.

Weekes-Grazette said that she would like to continue to distribute these readers throughout the month of October at the same location and the day would depend on what day the owners of the supermarket give her permission to be there.

When asked as to how they can ensure that the readers are going to those persons who genuinely cannot afford to purchase them on their own, she said that some of their members walk through neighbourhoods in Oistins, Christ Church where they visit and speak with different persons, get to know them, visit and speak with their neighbours and get to know the community as a whole.

They also take down the contact information for these persons and visit them periodically so that they can make sure that these persons are really in need.

The Chairperson said that while they are concentrating on the area of Oistins for now because this is where their headquarters is located and while she gives away these glasses in the St. Phillip constituency because that is where she lives, the distribution of these readers are not only available to persons in these areas, but to persons across the island.
