Lions Club celebrates 100th anniversary

THE Barbados Lions Club assembled on Sunday for a thanksgiving service in celebration of their 100th year as a functional, philanthropic and community-oriented institution. Having thanked God for His blessings in the past, they asked God that these blessings would continue as they embark on a journey to change the lives of those with whom they come into contact.

That being said, the Club is ready to resume the work at hand. As the new Lionistic year begins in July, there are several activities that the group will be taking on well into next year and beyond. Touching on their core points of focus, which are Vision, Youth, Hunger and Environment, the group plans on working even more assiduously in achieving the goals that they have set.

So far, there are plans to make a donation to the Eye Care Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital since this is where the work of Lions originally started. As for the youth, an extensive programme is being planned where they will benefit from coaching in various life skills. These include conflict resolution, leadership, healthy lifestyles, and interpersonal and communication skills; all of which will be made a part of the Leo Club Project.

Moreover, as the Lions continue their mission, their breakfast programme will continue in an attempt to alleviate some of the hunger which resides on the island and as for the environmental factor, recycling and tree planting projects will be undertaken.

While the Lions have big plans for the future, this by no means indicate that they have not been working all these years. Recently, all Lions Clubs across the world, specifically those in the Caribbean, were charged to touch 100 million lives in one or more of the core areas by 2018. So far, those clubs in the Caribbean have touched half of a million people and anticipate that they will exceed their target by the time 2018 comes.

Being guided by the mantra ‘Where there is a need, there is a Lion’, the Lions are ready to take on the challenges before them and do good for the sake of society. Furthermore, in January 2017, their Community Legacy Project will be launched to showcase what and who the Lions are and what they have done as a part of their 100th anniversary celebrations.
