Lashley continues touring island after storm

Minister of Transport and Works Michael Lashley continued tours around the island on Thursday in an effort to assess the road network and the needs of communities affected by Tropical Storm Matthew.

Saying he was satisfied with the state of most roads in the aftermath of the storm, he noted that the repairs to those, which had traditionally had experienced flooding during such weather were successful.

“I know that before at River Land in St. Philip before the road had been repaired all now I would have been getting calls from constituents about the mud and water on that road, but I haven’t,” he said.

He also noted that the drainage system and roadwork recently completed in Waterford Bottom, had also worked well, ensuring that it remained passable throughout the heavy downpours.

However, he admitted that with several streets yet to be completed, issues were to be expected.

“In other areas which have not been repaired we would have issues. I know for a fact that Bayfield would have some, as well as some others where road works are ongoing,” he added.

Speaking on issues in his own constituency, St. Philip North, Lashley outlined that two homes, one in Moncrieffe, and the other in Duncan, have roof damage, resulting in water corrosion. One of the residents had taken up shelter with relatives.

“We have contacted Rural Development (Commission) and all other agencies so that we can get to work on those houses,” he stated, during an interview on Mornin Barbados early in the morning.

Throughout his tour, he was accompanied by acting Minister of Drainage Senator Jepter Ince. (JMB)
