Governor General of Barbados, Her Excellency Dame Sandra Mason admires the resplendent military officers as they display their precision and poise during the Barbados Defence Force 39th Church Parade yesterday.

Keys to building a better Barbados

National pride is crucial

One local religious leader believes that before Barbadians can look to rebuild or improve the country, there are significant prerequisites, and one of them is having national pride.

Reverend Anderson Kellman said as much during his sermon at the St. Matthias Anglican Church yesterday, as the Barbados Defence Force (BDF) marked its 39th anniversary with a service and parade, with theme “A United Force: One Vision, One Journey to Build the Best Barbados We Can Together”.

The Reverend added that there must be a sense where every Barbadian understands the importance and has the kind of affection for the nation that is critical on any journey to rebuild or enhance the country. “We must be willing and ready to love our country enough to let our hands and let our minds into the process of rebuilding,” said Rev. Kellman.

Other prerequisites outlined by the passionate religious leader were personal integrity, personal responsibility and respect. During the sermon, the Reverend added that in the past every boy and girl could find themselves in Sunday school and values were instilled, but he noted that this sense of reverence was gone.

Suggesting that a plan should be established, Reverend Kellman said that this must be done to start the rebuilding process.

Highlighting the anniversary of the BDF, he pointed out that this was a good time for reflection and a good time to see what more could be done.

“On this journey to build the best Barbados, I want to remind you … there must be personal integrity, you must be willing to make a correct appraisal of the situation and then establish a plan of partnership as we journey together…,” said Reverend Kellman.
