HELP FOR STUDENTS

UWI Guild Grants Programme to aid financially strapped students

Students of the UWI Cave Hill Campus who are facing financial difficulty, now have an opportunity to apply for a grant of $500 from the UWI Guild of Students, to aid them in their pursuit of higher education.

Guild President, Olvine Holas, acknowledged the above as he announced the launch of the Guild Tuition Grants Programme, during a press conference held on campus yesterday, in the conference room of the Guild.

“We have allocated $22 000 in total and we will be distributing 44 of these grants to our students,” Holas indicated.

“You have to be registered and have a minimum GPA (grade point average) requirement of 2.5. Each recipient will be receiving $500 and it will be paid directly to the student’s account,” the President added.

“It may seem like a small amount, but as little as it is, it will go a long way in assisting those students who are experiencing financial difficulties,” Holas stressed.

Acknowledging that a lot of students encounter financial challenges as they pursue higher education, Holas noted that the Grants Programme is just one structure put in place, to aid those in need.

“At the Guild of Students, we try to always encourage the students to come and speak with us and we try our best to assist those students. We have had cases where it went beyond our control of being able to assist students, but the University administration, they have supportive staff and support systems that accommodate these students and they assisted them in ways that helped them to get over their difficulties. So we do have students with challenges and we also have structures in place to assist those students as necessary,” Holas pointed out.

He is meanwhile issuing a reminder to UWI new and continuing students who are Barbadian nationals, that they can also apply for the Higher Education Financial Grant for the academic year 2016-2017, from the Ministry of Education, for their undergraduate  degrees.
