Healthy beverage donated to Cancer Support Services

THE Cancer Support Services has received a donation of a healthy beverage to be presented to its clients and some family members of these clients.

Twenty cases, each containing 48 cans of the flavoured water, Sparkling Ice, were presented recently to President of Cancer Support Services, Kathy-Ann Kelly-Springer. This donation was done at the organisation’s “Arborside” Belmont Road, St. Michael headquarters.

Cynthia Dawson, Brand Manager, Sparkling Ice, told the media that it was not the first occasion Caribbean Supply Chain Limited, the local distributors of Sparkling Ice, has made a donation to Cancer Support Services. She added that the no-sodium and no-sugar product is an alternative to sodas. It was brought in by the company as a way of providing Barbadians with a beverage that allows them to reduce their sugar intake, take better care of themselves, and assist them with reducing their risk of being diabetic or obese.

“We have brought in this beverage as a need for an alternative to traditional sodas on the market… This beverage is helpful for persons who are trying to reduce their sugar intake, curb their soda intake, anyone who is diabetic or pre-diabetic, because the beverage does not have any calories or sugar in it. It is sparkling mountain water, so you will get the fizz of a soda without the sugar and calories that come with that.”

In her remarks, President Kelly-Springer stated it was a welcomed donation. She added, “We find that some of the patients journeying with cancer develop side effects, and then being on medication and stuff like that, they tend go into becoming diabetic. So having the flavoured water would really assist us so that we can provide them with an alternative.”

Kelly-Springer further said that the organisation is always looking for ways to greater assist its clients.

“We want to let them know that a healthy lifestyle is the way to go, that can allow them to manage their journey and survive the cancer. To add, we would like to do more for our patients. If we can bring on a nutritionist to work with the patients to help them plan their meals and to incorporate healthy living, we know that it would long living for our cancer survivors.” (MG)
