Griffith wins St. John nomination

On Sunday evening, members of the St. John constituency gathered at St. John Primary School to vote for new a Barbados Labour Party candidate to contest in the next general election.

Scores of constituents came out in support of their favourite candidates, and many had to settle for listening in on the nominees’ presentations from outside.

Three persons were nominated and this was perceived as a sign by Master of Ceremonies, Peter Phillips, that there is a growing interest in the representation of the parish of St. John. Nominated first was Keith Rayside; part of the third generation of a warm and loving family, Rayside pledged to uphold the values instilled in him from an early age. He asserted that he is ready, willing and able to work on the behalf of the people of St. John.

The second candidate to be nominated was Fabian Jones. Jones – proposed by his mother – quickly but comprehensively delivered a myriad of reasons why he should be elected as the candidate for St. John. Being heavily involved in social work, having lived in St. John his entire life, and his many visions for the development of the parish were among those reasons listed.

Nevertheless, the election was won by one who describes himself as the “Blood of the blood of St. John,” Charles Griffith.

A favourite with those gathered from the start, Griffith told stories of the many developments and empowerment projects that he embarked upon during his time as a Youth Officer for the parish. Furthermore, describing himself with attributes, such as being pro-active, hardworking and being committed to the cause, secured his spot on the BLP for the next election.

The election ended in triumph for Griffith who received a 21 vote lead over his competitors with 58. Keith Rayside received 37 votes while Fabian Jones received 24 votes. Giving his victory speech, Griffith stated that there is a lot of work to be done; but assured that the constituency is looking to walk down a new road to create history.

The final nomination for the Barbados Labour Party will take place on Wednesday in St. Michael North West.

The conclusion of this process will enable the party to move on with its conference slated for October 28th-30th.
