Gordon Greenidge Primary hosts Independence Parade

As part of the school’s activities to celebrate Barbados’ 50th Anniversary of Independence, Gordon Greenidge Primary School hosted an Independence Parade yesterday, through the immediate districts surrounding the school.

Under the theme, “Barbados: Past, Present and Future”, the parade began at the school located in Bakers, St. Peter and proceeded onto Rock Dundo, through to Upper Carlton, finally culminating in Sion Hill, at the Sion Hill Community Centre. At the Community Centre, motivational speeches on the topic “Children, The Future of Barbados”, were given to students by well-known personalities, Gaynelle Marshall and Wayne Simmons.

Principal of Gordon Greenidge Primary, Angela Smith explained the concept for the parade.

“Our theme for this term is ‘Barbados: Past, Present and Future’. The infants, they are the ones who are representing the future, since they are the youngest ones. The lower juniors, who are the seven to eights, eight to nines, they are representing the present and the older ones are the past. So the whole idea behind the parade, was to depict these three categories as we go through the neigbourhood,” Smith told The Barbados Advocate.

The pupils meanwhile were eager to display their placards, depicting prominent persons from the past, as well as the present. “Barbados-Future” was also ably depicted on a banner, proudly carried by the little ones. The students also carried a number of local artifacts with them, depicting all things Barbadian.

Smith also explained that preceding the parade, earlier that morning, a representative group from the school also made a presentation to the eldest member of the community, Ms. Miriam Payne, who lives in Rock Dundo.

“We started off by visiting the oldest resident in the community, Miriam Payne. She is 103 years old. So the prefects visited with her, they chatted with her and they sang some of her favourite hymns to her. We also presented her with a fruit basket and with a monetary donation from this school,” she said of the giving back initiative.
