Good parenting key

A nonagenarian has expressed concern about the indiscipline being exhibited among the youth, and is suggesting that to ensure the next generation does not go down the same path, greater focus should be placed on ensuring parents develop good parenting skills.

That’s the idea being put forward by long-standing member of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), Astor B. Watts. He made the suggestion as he delivered the weekly lunchtime lecture at the Party’s headquarters on Friday, on the topic ‘Fifty and Onwards – Then, Now and a Possible Beyond’. He explained that in bygone years the village played a role in bringing up the children, but lamenting that this is no longer the case, he suggested that there is a need to return to those traditions. His comments came as he added that parents also need to instil good values in their children, which would serve them into adulthood.

“I have observed over a few weeks and months now, that we should revisit parenting because when we do good parenting that child is able to benefit from that interest, and when he or she goes to the infant, primary or the extended schools, he is able to determine good from bad and able to shun the evil spirits at work. [In addition], be able to be polite and obedient and that parental training has done good and excellent service for many of us who are still around and went into the world of work. And by having that parental training, we have been able to benefit and benefit enormously,” the Party stalwart said.

Watts said many of the values and good manners children were taught have also been lost. He charged that there has been a complete change in this regard. With that in mind, he is entreating the powers that be to put provisions in place to assist parents through entities such as PAREDOS and the parent-teacher associations. He made the call as he suggested that we have already lost part of the present generation of youth.

“…Throughout Barbados, the Caribbean and wider afield, when you read or you hear, it is children who are giving problems, whether it is in the schools, whether it is in the communities or whatever; and I think that it is important that parenting be taken into serious consideration so that the next generation would be in a better position,” he stated. (JRT)
