Members of the public fully support the view that steps should be taken to not only increase the membership of the Barbados Landship Association, but have it continue for years to come.

They shared this perspective on Friday as they spoke to The Barbados Advocate at the Holy Innocents Anglican Church. It was there a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of the late Lord High Admiral, Vernon Watson, occurred. He held the top post in the organisation.

Speaking to this newspaper, Aidan Taylor stated he was in favour of measures to not allow the association to die, but to continue on.

“The Landship is an organisation that has been with us for over 100 years. It is very unique to our culture and it is one of the few things we should hold on to. If you look around, there are so many things that we are losing. This is an organisation that teaches discipline and shows love for country. When we look back at the history of our nation where our sisters the slaves came from, in the hard times these are things that formed and our young people should hold on to them and pass them on to future generations.”

Meanwhile, Denise Watson stated she felt the organisation “should go on longer”. She also said she felt good about the comments in a media article where two government officials indicated their desire to see the organisation survive and grow.

In his sermon during the funeral, Rev. Canon Noel Burke additionally made reference to what was said by the officials. He said he was pleased that such a view was shared.

“The Barbados Landship that has been bequeathed to us by the Lord High Admiral, is an institution that we must treasure, that we must value the way we would treasure or value a rare diamond or ruby, the way we would hold it in our hands. We must treasure this institution and I am pleased with the officials that are saying that we will not allow this organisation to go by the wayside, we cannot afford it. Our nation cannot afford it because it belongs to all of us. The Barbados Landship, bequeathed to us by the Lord High Admiral, belongs to us. It is Barbadian, it is Caribbean.” (MG)
