Fresh Market opens in Coverley

Grocery shopping has now become less of a hassle for residents of Coverley and surrounding districts as the island’s newest supermarket, Fresh Market, officially opened its doors yesterday.

Located in the Villages at Coverley, the store, which carries the popular, more traditional grocery items, also offers special brands and products for the health conscious. Among several of its services feature a deli, with a soup station, salad and sandwich bar; a bakery; a cheese station; peanut and almond butter making machines; a vast selection of wines; and for coffee lovers, 11 types of freshly ground beans from dispensers.

“We have the ground flax seeds and chia seeds and all the blends. We have all special sauces, all of the celebrity chef sauces. We are fully loaded with all of those specialty items as well as every day, we have the run-of-the-mill tuna for $1.65. So we have everything you can want, even if you want to just come in and buy a bottle of non-alcoholic wine or a bottle of champagne,” outlined General Manager, Derek Deane.

Giving the assurance that most of the fruits, vegetables and meats were locally produced, Deane said that the supermarket, which currently employs 59 individuals, was committed to upholding its tagline ‘As Fresh as it gets’.

He further outlined that all farmers providing the supermarket were vetted to ensure that produce making it onto the shelves were not stolen.

“They have to show us that they are actually bona fide farmers… We ensure that all of the chicken farmers are licensed and have health inspectors all day long at their farms. We do our due diligence to ensure that we are correct,” he stated.

Admitting that the supermarket had been long coming, Anna Clarke, General Manager of Housing Concepts SRL, said that the promise made to residents had now been fulfilled.

She pointed out that after failing to find an investor that could meet the requirements to take over the gym and supermarket projects, Housing Concepts – the developer behind Coverley Square –  made the decision to fund the two, creating its own unique brand.

“Fresh Market has followed on from Club Fitness, again with keeping with our vision and what we want to provide for the residents as well as the general public of Barbados at the Villages of Coverley,” she told the media yesterday.

Fresh Market opening hours are as follows: Mondays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesdays to Saturdays from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
