The youth are the future of tourism.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Tourism Product Authority (BTPA), Marsha Alleyne mentioned this during the Tourism and Maritime Showcase at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre yesterday.

She added that it was important to attract the children at this stage while they are looking at career choices and for them to see that there are viable options.

“We want for them to engage with the information that is here. We want for them, obviously to make informed decisions as they go on to either BCC, UWI or some other formal discipline – that they have an idea of what careers are open to them in the tourism industry,” said Alleyne.

The acting CEO noted that there are at least 52 careers from a hospitality and tourism perspective and Barbadians tend to limit themselves in this specific field. She explained that most assumed there are only roles in bartending, housekeeping and culinary arts. Alleyne outlined the career possibilities in marketing, transportation and social media.

During the interview, the head of the BTPA encouraged Barbadians to download the My Barbados App which highlights the best places on the island to visit and local activities.

The theme this year was “Tourism and Digital Transformation” and all secondary schools and tertiary institutions were invited to see exhibitions in areas of culinary, genealogy, cultural, community and agriculture tourism.
