Focus on charity

Unlike other 5K and 10K walks and runs that focus on the competition aspect of the event, the Digicel and Barbados Defence Force’s Have a Heart Walk and Run will focus solely on charity, which means there will not be any first, second or third place prizes.

Word of this came from Captain Michael Jules, member of the BDF Morale, Welfare and Recreation Committee and BDF Sports Programme Co-ordinator, as he discussed the 2018 plans for the Have a Heart Walk and Run and Boot Camp Series, during the Sponsors breakfast, which took place at St. Ann’s Fort, yesterday morning.

“The charity walk and run will take place on Saturday, August 11, 2018, beginning at 06:00 hours, and this will commence the BDF Anniversary week of activities,” he said.

“We will be focusing on the charity aspect, so there will be no prizes of first to third place. We want to encourage your workers and organisations to partner with us.”

He noted, however, that there will be raffles for prizes so persons will get the opportunity to win something.

He went on to note that there will be a cool down session upon completion of the walk, which will be followed by a Health and Corporate Fair. This will be held in the square at St. Ann’s Fort until one in the afternoon, where there will be HIV testing, food and drinks on sale as well as a children’s zone.

Additionally, Jules revealed that they were also going to be offering a Boot Camp series, which will comprise five series over a span of six weeks, which will start on April 16. “The cost for this is $15 per session or $30 per week, which will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday; or you can pay $150 for the entire series which is six weeks,” he said.

“The times for these will be either 5 to 6 p.m. or 6 to 7 p.m. on the mentioned days. We will be putting on the boot camps with the assistance of trained and professional personal instructors drawn from the BDF. They will give a wide variety and cross-section of fitness activity. There will also be pre-testing done to determine the starting level of fitness.”

Jules revealed that registration for these events will begin shortly as registration forms will be available on both the BDF website and the Precious Touch Foundation Inc. website. He noted that persons could either register individually for $20 or for $15 per person if they register as a group of ten people or more. Persons who show up on the morning of the walk and wish to join last minute will have to pay $25.

He highlighted that there would be a revised route and advised persons to pay special attention to the route change.
