Flagstaff Road to be completed soon, says Phillips

While giving no definitive completion date, the Ministry of Transport, Works and Maintenance is assuring residents that Flagstaff Road will be completed “very, very soon”.

Minister in the Ministry of Transport, Works and Maintenance, Peter Phillips, gave that assurance while responding to queries by Minister in the Ministry of Economic Affairs and representative for St. Michael South Central, Marsha Caddle, who questioned the continued delays in finishing the heavily utilised road, which has been under construction for over a year.

“This road has been going on for sometime. We have had some challenges, notwithstanding having had to go back to Cabinet to come to Parliament to have the funds to pay the contractor at some point in time, soon after we came into office,” he said.

Just before Christmas last year, part of the road had been paved, but the majority has been left unfinished, leading to headaches for some residents and road users – a situation which Caddle noted must be addressed.

“We were able to pave 200 metres of the road and 490 metres remain. We understand the inconvenience caused to the residents and we have directed our deputy CTO, whose responsibility it is in terms of the road, to meet with residents and offer an apology on behalf of the Ministry. So we will be following closely as this is a matter that has been raised quite often at our management meetings with regards to having that road completed as quickly as possible, and of course there are other roads that might have been started and persons have been affected and we are looking to minimise or eliminate any inconvenience that has been caused to residents in their respective areas,” Phillips added while in Parliament on Monday night.
