Faaizah Bhana wins Republic Bank RightStart Primary Schools’ Speech Contest

It was time for celebration when Faaizah Bhana was announced winner of the Republic Bank RightStart Primary Schools’ Speech Contest.

The ten-year-old Al-Falah Muslim Primary School pupil’s delivery of her speech entitled, ‘Freedom – 50 years and Beyond’, outshone that of the five other finalists, who took to the stage when the competition was held yesterday at Olympus Theatres, Sheraton Mall.

Securing second position was Naresha Seowdat of St. Margaret’s Primary School. Meanwhile in third place was Latavia Hazell-Codrington of Hindsbury Primary School. The other finalists were: Akayla Lynch of Hindsbury Primary School, Lashauntea Sobers of St. Joseph Primary School and Talha Mohamed of Al-Falah Muslim Primary School.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Republic Bank, Ian De Souza, in his welcome address, indicated that the contest, which is in its sixth year, saw the participation of 34 primary schools – four more than last year. He added that the annual competition has an objective of “enhancing the ability of children and young Barbadians to communicate effectively and dynamically through speech”.

He further stated that the contest is an integral component of the bank’s “corporate social responsibility programme, which is called the Power to Make a Difference”.

“Each year under the programme, we allocate approximately $500 000 to initiatives that fall under four specific pillars – the power to care, the power to learn, the power to help and the power to succeed.”

He continued, “Specific initiatives underlying each of these pillars span the areas of Health and Poverty Alleviation, Sport, Culture and Youth Development. As a specific initiative, the RightStart Speech Contest fits in under Youth Development.”
