Evans gets Star of the North Award

The biennial Star of the North Award was presented recently to former educator Thesby Evans, for his outstanding contribution to education.

The presentation took place this week at the Daryll Jordan Secondary School’s Awards and Prize Giving Ceremony, held at the educational institution located in Trents, St. Lucy. Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management, Valentine Yearwood presented the award to Evans, before a packed hall.

Before Evans retired, he held a number of senior positions in education. He began his career as a teacher at the Arlington High School and the St. David’s Boys’ School. From there, he moved to the St. Lucy Secondary School, as the school was previously known, where for twenty-three years, he gave yeoman service.

As a member of staff at St. Lucy Secondary, he served as a teacher of Geography and Social Studies. During his tenure, he worked diligently to instill in his students the skills which they needed to succeed, both academically and socially.

As an administrator, Evans acted as Head of the General Studies Department and as a Senior Teacher (Year Head). Always one for excellence and high achievement, he never compromised his standards. He was able to deal with delinquency in a firm, but humane manner. Thus, he was deeply respected by students and colleagues and became a mentor to both groups. Though he was a disciplinarian, he was a friendly face to his colleagues and a person who found humour in every situation.

Evans was also known to confidentially and quietly do community work. He was known to drive around and actively look for anyone who was challenged, to ensure that that person was fed and was able to retain their dignity. This selfless duty continued, long after Evans retired.

The esteemed Star of the North is a devout Christian and a resident of St. Lucy. The 2018 awardee is a widower. He has two sons, Larry and Roger. (RSM)
