Energy in focus at St. Mary’s Primary Science Expo

St. Mary’s Primary School students have learnt more about different forms of energy through their participation in that school’s Science Expo.

This was shared by Science Teacher, Beverly Moore, who spoke to The Barbados Advocate recently. A date was set as the official opening and viewing of the Expo by students, parents and members of the public. However, viewing was not possible on the day because of the poor weather conditions experienced.

Moore, however, shared information about the expo with the press. She stated that this is the third year for the event, which has as its theme, ‘We have the Energy’. She further said that dis-plays on show comprised posters, booklets and science projects created by pupils from Reception to Class 4. Some of the forms of energy highlighted through these include wind energy and solar energy.

“[The Expo] is a combination of the year’s work based on a theme from the Class 4s called ‘Energy’. The particular focus is the buzzwords S.T.E.M and S.T.E.A.M. S.T.E.M is Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and S.T.E.A.M is Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics, so it is an integrated project.”

Moore also pointed out that the expo serves a critical function of highlighting “the need for science education at the primary level and also, to let the children feel that they can achieve in any way that they possibly can. Right now, for the Class 4s, it is also for them to wet their feet in terms of when they go to secondary school and they have to work on projects. They have to work with people and they have to follow a rubric, so it is preparation for secondary schools for them; and for the others, it is just learning to work with others in their environment and [developing] the soft skills”.
